Behind His Eyes: Consquences by Althea Romig: Review

BEHIND HIS EYES – CONSEQUENCES is a reading companion, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig, recommended to be read after completing all of the CONSEQUENCES SERIES: Consequences, Truth, and Convicted. It is not a standalone book and should not be read as such.

This companion was written to explore the thoughts and motivations of Anthony Rawlings, the man behind the consequences. It was not intended as a total rewrite of Consequences, but meant to enhance the reader’s understanding. BHE-Consequences contains significant scenes from the novel Consequences, as experienced from Anthony’s point of view. It also contains never before read, behind the scenes information, as well as, a glossary of the characters and a timeline devoted to the events within Consequences.

BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES is a dark journey into the mind of the man who believes that he controls everything and controls nothing. Because there is more to learn about the man who:

Once upon a time, signed a napkin that he knew was a contract. As an esteemed businessman, he forgot one very important rule—he forgot to read the fine print. It wasn’t an acquisition to own another person as he’d previously assumed. It was an agreement to acquire a soul.
—Aleatha Romig CONVICTED

It was a long and painful acquisition—especially from Behind His Eyes!

Aleatha Romig is the queen on Mind=Blown. Behind His Eyes: Consequences is no different. I am not on Team Tony, never have been, and probably never will be. After finishing Convicted I maybe didn’t want him to be torn apart by a pack of rabid dogs, but he is still one of my least favorite characters. I will never be able to forgive him for the things he did in Consequences. That being said I loved every second of BHE: Consequences. It was a brilliant idea. It is not a retelling of Consequences, it is some of the most important scenes told from Tony’s POV. Want to know what he was going through when Claire had her “accident” or how the final event in Consequences came to happen? Here you get it all the dirty details, every thought that ran through Tony’s sinister mind. He had begun possible redeeming himself in Convicted, but this book threw me back to the “burn him in fire” mentality.

“I want you to make me a promise. A promise, that you will do your best to follow my rules. That you will do your best – to never give me cause to hurt you again.”

Just GRRRR!!!! I seriously can’t think about this book without wanting to nail some guy in the junk. I know Tony is not real, but when you read these stories he feels all too real, and as I can’t kick him in the balls while reading any ol’ guy would do. I just cannot say how much I love this series. Even months after reading the books you still think about them. And god forbid someone mention the name Tony Rawlings…your blood runs hot and you get an urge to be stabby. This is one book series that I can say if it were made into a movie, even if it were only half as good as the book, could easily win an Oscar. No joke. If you haven’t read this series please for the love of all that is holy do it!! I am going to go off into a corner and sulk over my hatred of Tony. If you’d like to join me there is plenty of room….and chocolate.

Aleatha was kind enough to answer some burning questions and provide her answers for the tour.

ASK ALEATHA...
1.       Was it difficult to write Tony’s POV?

It was! I tried to start this book multiple times. Each time I’d get so mad at him that I’d have to stop writing. (Don’t let that scare you) My anger was directed at his indifference more than his behavior. Then, one day I realized my problem. It was Claire. She’d lived in my head for almost three years. I knew what she experienced and how she felt. I couldn’t be Tony with Claire there. Once I realized that and evicted Claire (no exorcism was necessary—lol) I let Tony take over. From what I’ve heard...it was effective. You’ll have to let me know.

2.       Is this just a rewrite of Consequences from Tony’s POV?

No. BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES is NOT a rewrite. It is a “reading companion”.  I went through CONSEQUENCES and with the help of my betas; we decided upon significant scenes that if told from Tony’s POV would enlighten readers. I also added “behind the scenes” scenes to again enlighten readers.
CONSEQUENCES was told mostly from Claire’s POV. Therefore, conversations and things happened outside of her observation. This companion allows readers to witness some of these scenes.

3.       What if I don’t remember one or some of the scenes you chose for BEHIND HIS EYES?

I have included references at the beginning of each chapter to help you, if you want, to associate the scene Tony is experiencing with the scene in CONSEQUENCES, for example: Chapter 7 of BHE CONSEQUENCES is entitled: The Accident—September 2010, (Consequences—Chapter 19).  That way, if you don’t remember the accident scene, you can go back and read it in Consequences.  Honestly, it is kind of fun, perhaps not with that scene, to see how things and actions are perceived differently by the opposite POV.

4.       Is BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES a standalone book?

No. Truthfully, if you only read BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES it would not make sense. It is only 62,000 words, as opposed to CONSEQUENCES which was 167,000 words. This is a reading companion. I don’t recommend reading it until you have completed the entire CONSEQUENCES SERIES. If you would read it directly after CONSEQUENCES some of the surprises in TRUTH would be revealed.

5.       What is something that we don’t know about your books?

I have made an effort to include all of my children’s and my niece and nephew’s names in my books. In most cases they aren’t the main characters. (I have no relatives named Claire or Anthony) However, beginning in Truth I slipped their names in as tertiary characters. In some cases I used a first name as a last name. BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES contains a glossary of characters. That glossary will grow with each reading companion.

6.       Tell us something that you think is fun about your books.

Well, besides using my family members’ names, I sometimes use whatever I see or hear. For example, I was watching The Big Bang Theory with my daughter as I was writing the original accident scene in CONSEQUENCES. That is why the attending doctor’s name is Dr. Leonard.  We were driving to Florida while I was writing some scenes in CONVICTED. I looked up and saw a billboard for Fairfield Resorts. That is how another character was named Dr. Fairfield. Honestly, that list could go on and on. So, I guess you could say it was a matter of convenience.

7.       Will there be a BEHIND HIS EYES for each one of the books in the CONSEQUENCES series?

Yes. I am currently working on BEHIND HIS EYES TRUTH. It will be similar to BHE CONSEQUENCES since we weren’t privileged enough to have very much of Tony’s POV in TRUTH.  It begins where TRUTH begins, with Claire’s unorthodoxed release from prison.
BEHIND HIS EYES CONVICTED will be different. Readers are given more of Tony’s POV in CONVICTED. I didn’t want to rehash what readers already knew. Therefore, BEHIND HIS EYES CONVICTED will be “The Missing Years.”  It will begin at a tragic event that happens in CONVICTED and give the readers an insight into the two years that are only alluded to in CONVICTED.  I haven’t started writing that one yet, but I’m very excited. It will be more of a standalone story. Of course, it wouldn’t make sense if you hadn’t read the series.

8.       What are your plans after you release all of the BEHIND HIS EYES reading companions?

I want to write a new series. I don’t know for sure if it will be two books or more. I want to develop a relationship with new characters and create new twists and turns. I have some notes and some ideas, but I’ll be honest, Anthony Rawlings is not an easy character to let go. However, I believe it is time.
I’ve been asked if I’ll ever write more about them. My answer is “I don’t know.” I can’t say NEVER, but I believe it is time to move on.

Loved your review and Aleatha's interview. I am not a huge fan of Anthony's. When i have finished convicted i honestly do not hate him as much as i did. It is one of those books that will never ever leave you. I tell everyone they need to read it. It is a must read. Yeah it'll pull you through a wringer, drag your emotions through a hedge backwards but it is sooooooooo worth it.
