Lorie's Top Reads of 2013

Making a top anything list is hard.  If you’re asked to pick 5, you want 6.  Asked for 10, you want 11.  Well, I couldn’t even pick 10.  I ended up picking my favorite 13 of 2013.  And even with such a big number, I cheated – some of my picks are part of a series so I combined them into one entry.  These are the books that stayed with me for days after, that I could yell endlessly from the rooftops about, and absolutely positively LOVED!!!!!

Are they in order?  Kind of.  Pepper Winters is hands down my favorite of the year (so much so, I want to trade my sister for her).  Everything after is in order, but I could argue my rankings all day long, change them 50 more times, and still not be satisfied.  So.... yes, they are in order but I could move them around a thousand times and they'd still be in order.

Regardless of how hard it was to choose, I'm really excited to share my list with you!

Top Reads of 2013

Tears of Tess/Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #1, #2)
Pepper Winters

Tears of Tess is exquisite, raw, intense, and unputdownable – everything that makes a book PHENOMENAL! It’s emotional and gripping, and it had my heart beating out of my chest. Yes, it’s dark, edgy, and it WILL make you uncomfortable; but, Pepper Winters was able to strike the perfect balance between dark and passionate.”

“Pepper Winters pulls you back into the world of Tess and Q, deeper than you ever thought possible. QQ is simply unforgettable. It will play with your mind, haunt you for days after, and tattoo itself in your thoughts. When I close my eyes I can picture every single image that Pepper Winters has laid out between the pages. She creates something beautiful from something so horrible. She brilliantly walks the fine line between too much and not enough.”

Songs of Submission
CD Reiss

“Seriously, this serial is like crack for bookworms that like it HOT!! I can't get over how addictive this is!!!! I feel like I'm going crazy every time an episode comes to an end.....”

…………… this author isn’t a millionaire let alone signed by a publisher!!!!”

With You/Torn From You (Tear Asunder #0.5, #1)
Nashoda Rose

"This is not a page-turner, it’s a nail-biter."

"According to the Urban dictionary, in Boston when you need to describe something as being really awesome you say it's wicked pisser. (pronounced piss-ah)  For example, The Sox game last night was wicked pisser.

With You/Torn From You is WICKED PISSER."

"This book will have your heart beating out of your chest, panting for air, and burning from the anticipation.  The feelings Nashoda elicits from the reader are unreal.  Nashoda Rose has created the perfect @&^%@&$#^$^#!  Logan is a total and utter a-hole.  And, I don’t mean conceited and full of himself, I mean full out A-S-S-H-O-L-E. "

There Is A Light

(yes, this is fanfic but it is the most brilliant piece of writing that I just had to include it)

"This book is so unbelievably amazing and perfect in every single way. Writing a review that would do it justice is damn near impossible, so I'm not even going to attempt it.

You know how most books you can compare to another and say it gave you the same feeling??? Well, not this one. This is book has nothing. It is the most original piece of writing I have ever read. It's truly one of a kind."

Losing Hope (Hopeless #2)
Colleen Hoover

“After reading every Colleen Hoover book out there, I think from now on my review for any of her books will be: Duuuuuhhhhh@!&!%#!? It's a Colleen Hoover book. Why do you even need to read a review???? JUST BUY IT!”

Evan Arden Trilogy
Shay Savage

“Everything about this book is thrilling and intense. It will have your emotions running high and leave you speechless. I could not turn the pages fast enough. I willed myself not to look any further than the word I was reading. I was so tempted just to glance down a few sentences or a paragraph to find out what happens next. Shay Savage knows how to capture your attention and keep it.”

Unspoken (The Woodlands #2)
Jen Frederick

Beautiful Disaster fans will ABSOLUTELY love this!"

"Wow! Just….WOW!!!! This totally caught me by surprise. Unspoken is knock your socks off AMAZING ! I FREAKING loved the hell out of this book! Every single minute from start to finish was simply fantastic. I haven't enjoyed a book this much in quite a while.”

Inky/Cole (The Leaves #1, #2)
JB Hartnett

"Wow!!!! Just wow! (sigh) I really really love this book!! No, I ADORE it!!! Inky is one of those hidden gems everyone needs to discover.”

“Cole is full of passion, emotion, healing, drama, laughs, heartache, joy, and of course hot sex. I absolutely adore books that are this passionate and real that I become so lost in them I can't tell where I end and the characters begin. I love everything about this series: the story, the characters, and the writing…. everything.”

The Cityscape Series
Jessica Hawkins

"This is exactly what I have been searching for!!!!! Move over Christian and Gideon…….you ladies need to meet David."

"Once it grabbed me, it did not let go. It got under my skin, and I.COULD.NOT.PUT.IT.DOWN."

"The level of writing is amazing and the story is so well thought out and captivating; and it only got better with Come Alive. This is the most angst-tastic series. The buildup and anticipation is painfully wonderful."

Marked.  Part 1:  The Missing Link
J.M. Sevilla

"I have been on a roll lately choosing books and thoroughly enjoying them, but Marked is off the charts. I cannot fully describe how much I loved this book. This is so effing original and mind-blowingly impressive."

“I feel bad having only paid 99 cents for this work of shear brilliance that I’m almost embarrassed to admit what I paid for it. 99 cents buys you practically nothing these days. I can’t even ride the subway in Boston for what I paid for this book. Amazon needs to give you the option to pay additional money to an author as sort of a tip for great reading instead of great service. I gladly would have paid five times the price for this one.”

The Art of Control (Art of D/S #3)
Ella Dominguez

“Christian Grey? Who’s that? DYLAN YOUNG IS THE MAN YOU NEED TO MEET!!!!!

At first this was going to be my review because no words will ever do this justice:
Love it, love it, fucking love it!!!! Read this series now!

I decided to at least try to get my thoughts down on paper only because I this series so much!”

Breach/Dissolution/Infraction (Breach Series)
KI Lynn

“This book is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. with a capital A (all capitals for that matter). I don’t know what to say other than this is really really reeeeally super good! (well, it’s better than good) Soooooooo good that you won't want to put it down -- you'll be dying to find out what happens between Nathan and Delilah and what the hidden secrets are that you’ll be saying "just one more chapter, I promise........". The night I started this, I literally forced myself to turn the Kindle off at 3AM, or I would have been totally useless in the morning.”

Breach oozed sex. Infraction oozes emotion. It’s the kind of emotion that will have your feelings running wild and your heart left in pieces. My heart truly ached for Nathan and Lila. I felt every single ounce of their hurt and pain.”

Phoebe Lane

O.U.T.S.T.A.N.D.I.N.G. Cursive is a breath of fresh air!!!

"Phoebe Lane has hit a homerun, kicked the winning goal, scored a touchdown……..whatever you want to call it, Phoebe Lane has done it with Cursive!!!!"

“It is filled with endearing characters, heartache, laughs galore, heart melting moments, and palpable sexual tension all mixed into a gloriously wonderful story. The dialogue is smart, sexy, fun, and witty, and Phoebe Lane' s writing style…. well, I JUST LOVE IT!!! The writing is solid and the level of maturity is remarkable, it will hook you from the very beginning.”

I know!  I know! It was supposed to be thirteen but I absolutely could not leave this one out........

Access Restricted (Access #2)
Alice Severin

EPIC!!!! If you haven’t been reading Alice Severin, YOU SHOULD BE!!!!!!!

“There are books you read and books you savor. Access Restricted is one you savor. I found myself reading slower just to make sure I took it all in – every word Alice Severin writes has meaning and purpose.”

"And, that ending!!! One of the most amazing EVER! I LOVE IT!"

Quintessentially Q (Monsters in the Dark #2) by Pepper Winters: Blog Tour Review & Giveaway

Title: Quintessentially Q
Series:  Monsters in the Dark #2
Author: Pepper Winters
Genre:  Erotic/Dark Contemporary Romance
Release Date:  December 14, 2013

PURCHASE Quintessentially Q TODAY!!!!

“All my life, I battled with the knowledge I was twisted… fucked up to want something so deliciously dark—wrong on so many levels. But then slave fifty-eight entered my world. Hissing, fighting, with a core of iron, she showed me an existence where two wrongs make a right." Tess is Q’s completely. Q is Tess’s irrevocably. But now, they must learn the boundaries of their unconventional relationship, while Tess seeks vengeance on the men who sold her. Q made a blood-oath to deliver their corpses at Tess’s feet, and that’s just what he’ll do. He may be a monster, but he’s Tess’s monster.

There is nothing ordinary about this book.

There is nothing ordinary about these characters.

There is nothing ordinary about this author.

If you thought Tears of Tess wasn’t dark enough, Pepper Winters brought out the black paint for Quintessentially QQQ is deliciously dark with some disturbing scenes.  Definitely not for the faint of heart.

How can something so tragic and twisted be so beautiful and brilliant?

Not what I was expecting AT ALL!  It was a million times more brilliant than I ever could have imagined.  Pepper Winters pulls you back into the world of Tess and Q, deeper than you ever thought possible. QQ is simply unforgettable.  It will play with your mind, haunt you for days after, and tattoo itself in your thoughts.  When I close my eyes I can picture every single image that Pepper Winters has laid out between the pages.  She creates something beautiful from something so horrible.  She brilliantly walks the fine line between too much and not enough.

BE CAREFUL!!!  This is a story that can easily be spoiled.  Almost everything in QQ is unexpected so saying too much could ruin the experience for others – it happened to me, I read a seemingly innocent review that mentioned something that happened and it ended up being something quite significant.  QQ is such a special work of art that you really don’t need someone to tell you about the storyline – it truly does stand on its own.  But, I will say this about the story itself……    Monsters come back to haunt both Tess and Q, and a very unexpected monster rears its fierce and ugly head.  Tess and Q must fight for what is theirs.  But, are they strong enough to defeat that of brand monster?  Tess and Q find out what happens when you unknowingly taunt a sleeping monster.  And, the monster finds out what happens when you taunt Q.
Pepper Winters is a wicked genius with words!  Her writing is so fluid and flawless, you'd think it was impossible unless you have read her work.  What she can create with mere words is nothing short of beautiful and exquisite.  Her choice of words provides a rare kind of depth to her writing.  She creates a page-turner that is next to impossible to put down.  You need't look any farther than the prologue to get hooked.

I love the fact that Pepper didn't shy away from what some might consider taboo and very dark.  The characters acknowledge the fact that their needs are dark, but accept it without guilt or shame because that is who they are.  Pepper tackles some very difficult situations and makes no apologies for it.  Watering it down or making is less raw would have been disappointing, and I'm glad she went after it and did it right.

A Pepper Winters book isn’t just a story, it’s an experience.  She pays attention to EVERY LITTLE DETAIL – from the cover image to the symbolism to the art between the pages.  All of these things mix together to create a one-of-a-kind reading experience.

Pepper Winters is an automatic one-click author for me.  I will read ANYTHING she writes!!!!

You can find the full blog tour schedule here.

Pepper Winters wears many roles. Some of them include writer, reader, sometimes wife. She loves dark, taboo stories that twist with your head. The more tortured the hero, the better, and she constantly thinks up ways to break and fix her characters. Oh, and sex… her books have sex. She loves to travel and has an amazing, fabulous hubby who puts up with her love affair with her book boyfriends. Her debut book Tears of Tess is followed by Quintessentially Q and Twisted Together. You didn’t think Q could stop so soon, did you? Her other two titles, Last Shadow and Broken Chance will be coming soon.

Love is like an avalanche.  It hits hard, fast and without mercy.

At least it did for me when Sculpt, the lead singer of the rock band Tear Asunder knocked me off my feet. Literally, because he’s also a fighter, illegally of course, and he taught me how to fight. He also taught me how to love and I fell hard for him. I mean the guy could do sweet, when he wasn't doing bossy, and I like sweet.

Then it all shattered.

I was alone and fighting to survive.

When I heard Sculpt's voice, I thought he was there to save me. I was wrong.

*Warning: This book contains some disturbing situations, strong language and sexual content. Over 18 years.

This is a love story with some dark elements. No cliffhanger and next in the Tear Asunder series is Ream's story.

Title: With You
Series:  Tear Asunder, #0.5
Authors: Nashoda Rose
Genre: Erotic Romance
Release Date: December 18, 2013

Hosted By: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Sculpt is an illegal fighter.

He’s also the lead singer of a local rock band.

No one knows his real name.

And from the moment I met him, he made me forget mine.

In order to convince Sculpt to give me self-defense lessons, I had to follow his one rule—no complaining or he’d walk. I didn’t think it would be a problem. I’d been bucked off horses, kicked and stepped on. I could handle a few bruises. What I hadn’t anticipated was landing on my back with Sculpt on top of me and my entire body burning up for him.

I tried to ignore it.

Then I tried to stop it.

I failed of course. And having a hot, tattooed badass on top of me week after week, acting cool and completely immune to what he was doing to my body—it was frustrating as hell, so I broke his rule—I complained.

Then he kissed me.

Author’s Note: This novella is Sculpt and Emily’s beginning and how they met. It is an extra and not required to be read before “Torn from You”. Their story and what happens to them is the novel “Torn from You”.

*Warning* Huge cliff-hanger. Like huge! But “With You” and “Torn from You” are released on the same day.*

Nashoda Rose lives in Toronto with her assortment of pets. She writes contemporary romance with a splash of darkness, or maybe it’s a tidal wave. Her novel “Torn from You” is the first in the Tear Asunder series. When she isn’t writing, she can be found sitting in a field reading with her dog at her side while her horses graze nearby. She loves interacting with her readers on Facebook and chatting about her addiction—books.
