Awaken is book three in the Spiral of Bliss series by Nina Lane. *sigh* Here goes my disclaimer.... I wish I could type really fast like the guys in car commercials talk. If you haven’t read books one and two Arouse and Allure, please don’t read any further. I am going to be talking about things that occurred in those books. There is no way for me to do a review of this book without giving spoilers to those books. In addition, if you haven’t read those books, please, stop what you are doing and go buy them immediately. They are amazing! Now, on to regularly scheduled blogging....
It isn’t very often that we get really good books about married couples. Most of the time the quest of the book is right up to the point where the couple rides off into the sunset. Then you just assume they get their Happily Ever After. Sometimes the quest for the HEA is the story. I love this! Dean and Olivia, from all outward appearances are the perfect couple, but their marriage is strained, and plagued with issues. She is insecure, he is accused of sexual harassment by a vindictive graduate student, they are going through the loss of a pregnancy, Liv is struggling to come to terms with Dean keeping a huge truth from her. I could go on and on with the issues they have overcome in the past few months. Liv finally persuades Dean to take an assignment in Italy, to keep him away from his beloved job at King College, which he loves. In fact, he has been ordered to stay off the campus, pending the outcome of an investigation of the sexual harassment charges. The fact that Liv wants him to go away is really confusing to me at first although I come to understand her a little better throughout the book.
If I had to say what this book is about, it is about Liv discovering her strength, and learning to make it on her own. Not “alone” but on her own. There are more discoveries about Liv’s past revealed, that make you wonder how she ever survived her childhood. Since this is the last book in the trilogy, the culmination of the sexual harassment suit is finally reached. I think this is probably the sweetest, and hottest book of the trilogy yet. If you haven’t read the book, grab it NOW. I’m adding this book to my best of 2014 list, and giving it 5 stars. I adore Nina Lane. Also, if you haven’t given her other book, The Erotic Dark, you should check it out. It is a totally different genre, with strong BDSM themes, but it is really good!
