Making Over Maris by Sabrina York: Review

Wired, Book Three

When über-nerd Jack asks Sara to make him more attractive to women, she can’t say no—even though it’s an impossible task. He’s shaggy and doughy and hopelessly inappropriate. He has no style or emotional intelligence but he’s a good person. And a great friend. What Sara never expects? Beneath all that fur and geekiness is a steamy hunk just waiting to emerge.
Jack takes Sara’s regimen very seriously, working out and losing weight until he feels like a new man. He even complies with her command to shave his beard—because Jack didn’t ask Sara to make him over so he would be attractive to other women. He only wants to be attractive to her. They go on a series of fake dates, each hotter and more sinful than the last. It’s not long before Sara discovers Jack’s secret desire to be dominated and what began as an arrangement becomes something amazing—something that could be real.
Inside Scoop: Our hero appreciates Femdom—with the right woman. Our hero doesn’t appreciate perfect strangers grabbing his junk. Ask nicely first, ladies!

Making Over Maris is book three in the Wired series by Sabrina York. I’ll make my usual disclaimer, which is: I don’t give spoilers in my reviews, but when I’m reviewing books in a series, it is often difficult, or impossible to avoid giving spoiler to the earlier books. Please, proceed with caution if you haven’t read Adam’s Obsession or Tristan’s Temptation.

I am a HUGE Sabrina York fan, I read all of her books as soon as they come out. Adam’s Obsession is one of my top ten  books of all time. So when I found out Jack Maris was getting his own book, I was excited, and a little surprised. Jack wasn’t exactly a ladies man, or “hero” material in the earlier books. But I trust Sabrina to deliver in her stories.

Making Over Maris finds Jack deeply in love with his high school friend and co-worker Sara. He has been in love with her for years, and put himself in the friend zone just to be close to her. He is a self made millionaire, computer geek, and not overly attractive to the female population.

Sara is Jack’s best friend, and she is looking for Mr. Right. She thinks she has found him in Todd. The only problem is, once she revealed her true “nature” to Todd, he ran for the hills. Her true nature is that of a Domme. She is devastated by this rejection.

Jack comes up with a foolproof plan. He asks Sara to teach him to be irresistible to women. Well, a special woman. This is a common theme in romance novels, but here is where it gets a little different, since the GUY is the one being made over. None the less, it always makes me a little uncomfortable. I mean, are looks the ONLY thing people think about? I thought Sara was a little mean at times, but I think her personal issues with fear and rejection lent to that. I always wonder when someone changes their appearance and the other person magically sees them in a different light, if they go back to the old appearance, will the love fade away? I know, I know, I’m cynical. I can’t help it.

So, Sara starts instructing him on how to treat the ladies, taking him on “fake” dates, giving him reading materials, giving him a workout regimen. Jack puts his all into it, and excels, just as he does in everything. I love seeing how Sara’s perspective starts to change, and how Jack reacts to it.

Sara also has another surprise coming when she starts seeing signs that Jack might be more open to her Domme tendencies than any man in her past. They both have to face their fears and open their hearts to move beyond the “fake” dating and making things real.

I would be remiss in pointing out that it isn't very often that you get a really good BDSM novel that isn't over the top, but to have one that isn't over the top, AND has a female top? That is unheard of. You should read this book just for that reason. Sabrina York did an excellent job of portraying a fledgling D/s relationship (in a sexual sense).

As usual, this was a hot, steamy read, with a little bit of angst. Another five star read from Sabrina York.
