Gemma Andrews doesn’t trust men.

She’s been left with a bitter taste in her mouth after her father left her mother while she was still pregnant, for another woman, and started a whole new perfect family. Gemma doesn’t feel like she belongs with her father’s family—with her family—and has done everything she can to push them all away.
One summer, her last summer stuck with these people, is about to change all of that.

Abe North, the hunky night guard she meets by chance, breaks down Gemma’s carefully built cinderblock walls, and shows her what she’s been missing out on. He helps her to reconnect with the brother and sister she has kept at a safe distance all these years. In the end, maybe, just maybe, Abe can show Gemma that all men aren’t bad and that he’ll be the one who’ll be there for her.

But is Gemma ready to accept love?

Or is she too broken?

DAWN'S REVIEW

This was a read where I wanted to just smack the main Characters I mean seriously. Gemma is a Emo teen apparently due to the fact that her father left her Mother & her & married some one else. She has to spend every summer with her father & his family at the beach every summer & hates it. Doesn't speak to her half brother or sister for years but then one day it just all seems to come together & she moves on? I mean I get that it is all part of the story but it just made me shake my head.
Then on this last visit she meets Abe & everything changes for her she bonds with her half sister & half brother but doesn't forgive her Karen her Step Mother or Michael her Father. They keep trying to include her in their lives but Gemma refuses.
The love story is quick between Gemma & Abe & it is a cute sweet teen love which I do enjoy. There are other friends that Gemma finally makes during this last summer before she turns 18. The building of trust between the two and Abe's instant do whatever will make Gemma happy was sweet. Almost to sweet. They have fun times etc but then when the angst happens there is no confrontation there is just running away & for a year there are no answers to any questions as to why or what really happened that fateful night. I mean seriously there is no way in the world that anyone would ever just let that go. Even though during this time Gemma now learns that the love of her father is deeper than she has never known & her mother who is a hippy is just bitter. Gemma can forgive her Mom for telling her she wants nothing more to do with her yet she can not forgive her Step Mother who tries very hard to be kind and caring to her as well as her Father. Teen minds never have made sense to me and most probably never will. This book gave an unrealistic view of a blended family.
If there had been more development of the story, more realistic events & feelings maybe it would have been better. I mean everyone loves instant love but to have been such a downer for so long and to have it all just happen over night well it just made the story strange to me.
I give the story a 2 star for readers older than 20 but for teen readers this would be a 4,
I think maybe this was not my age group of reading. If I were in my teens then maybe this might have been just the book for me but being older this was hard for me to relate to.

Ten Fun Facts (It turned into 12 because I am just that fun.)
1. I was 6 weeks pregnant the day we adopted our son... and 10 weeks pregnant before I knew.
2. I can only watch my favorite movie, Life as a House, once a year because of how much it makes me ugly cry.
3. I have an unhealthy obsession with Emma Stone, thus my short run as a redhead.
4. I have a tattoo on my wrist that makes me feel like a rebel every time I see it.
5. My husband likes my books. This may seem silly to most but when your man loves to read a girly love story you wrote, it's pretty much awesome.
6. I've never broken a bone or sprained anything. (Knock on wood)
7. I do not listen to music when I write, it distracts me, however, songs always inspire scenes and even books. I also have to have music to edit or I will lose my mind.
8. My celebrity crush, and the only man I'm allowed to leave my husband for, is John Krasinski.
9. I hate, hate, hate beach vacations. They bore me to death. I love big cities with a lot to do. I'll be vising NYC for a week in September.
10. I tried grape hooka once and now if I smell grape leaves I gag and run.
11. I have a degree in accounting and don't use it AT ALL.
12. I hate bananas but love banana pudding and banana bread.
